Phone case marketing runs on adjectives. Rugged. Ultra-slim. Military-grade. None of those describe a material, and material is the only thing that determines what happens when your phone leaves your hand. Here's what each of the four common constructions actually does.
The short answer: silicone grips but has no structure. Polycarbonate is rigid but transmits shock. TPU absorbs energy but is floppy alone. A dual-layer tough case combines the last two, which is why it handles corner drops that single-material cases structurally cannot.

Silicone is soft and grippy. It absorbs impact well at low energy and feels secure in the hand, which prevents drops in the first place, an underrated form of protection. It also attracts lint, stretches out of shape over months, and offers almost nothing structural. A hard corner impact goes straight through it.
TPU, thermoplastic polyurethane, is the flexible plastic most shockproof cases are made from. It's the best single material for absorbing energy, and it's what lets a case flex on impact rather than crack. On its own it's floppy, and the clear versions have a well-known ageing problem.
Polycarbonate is rigid and impact-resistant, from the same material family used in safety glazing. Its strength is distribution: instead of absorbing a hit in one spot, it spreads the force across the whole shell. On its own it's brittle at the corners and transmits shock to the phone.
Dual-layer, which is what tough case actually means, combines the last two. A rigid polycarbonate outer spreads the load; a TPU inner absorbs what the shell distributes. Hard outside, forgiving inside. Each material covers the other's weakness.
What actually happens in a drop?
A phone dropped flat lands on a large surface area, and almost any case handles it. The failure mode is the corner drop, because all the energy of the fall concentrates into a point roughly the size of a fingernail.
That's the whole argument for two layers. A single rigid shell transmits that spike into the frame, where it becomes a cracked back panel. A single soft shell deforms and lets the corner meet the ground anyway. Two layers convert the spike into a spread: the shell moves the force sideways, the liner soaks up what's left.
Height matters less than people think. Surface matters more. Concrete and tile are unforgiving in a way carpet and grass are not, which is why real-world drops onto a kitchen floor break more phones than dramatic ones onto a lawn.
Why do clear phone cases turn yellow?
If you've owned a clear case, you know this one. Clear TPU yellows through photo-oxidation: UV light breaks the polymer chains, and the fragments react with oxygen to form colour-absorbing compounds inside the plastic. Body oils and heat accelerate it. Because it happens from within, no amount of cleaning reverses it, and how fast it appears depends almost entirely on sun exposure and whether the manufacturer paid for UV stabilisers.
This is the honest structural argument against clear. It's the only construction with a built-in expiry date, and the only one where the ageing is impossible to ignore, because you're looking at it against a white phone. A printed case fades far more slowly, and a sealed high-gloss finish protects the artwork underneath from exactly the same UV exposure.
Where tough cases lose
Fair is fair. A dual-layer case is thicker than a slim shell, usually by a millimetre or two, and if you want the thinnest possible phone in the tightest possible pocket, that's a real trade-off. Tough cases also hide the phone completely, which matters if you bought a colour you actually like looking at.
Thickness costs you something at the top charging tier, too. At 15W a dual-layer case makes no practical difference, but charger manufacturers advise cases under roughly 2mm to reach a full 25W, and a tough case is thicker than that by definition. Attachment and charging still work. Maximum speed may not.
What isn't a real trade-off is the slim-versus-protected framing you see everywhere. A well-designed dual-layer case is not a brick. The difference is the width of a couple of business cards, and it buys the corner protection single-layer cases structurally cannot provide.
Which case should you actually buy?
If you drop your phone rarely, keep it on soft surfaces, and want the thinnest possible profile, a slim polycarbonate shell is a reasonable choice and we won't pretend otherwise.
If you love the colour of your phone and want to see it, buy a clear case and accept that it will yellow. It's a consumable, and pricing it as one makes the decision easy.
